Golden Globes ’09 actually not that frustrating [awards]

True Blood

The Golden Globes were more than 48 hours ago, which in internet time is approximately 57 years, but if you’re desperado to know what I made of the winners you can check out my verdict here. (Spoiler: overall I was pretty chuffed – yay Anna Paquin!)

Golden Globe nominations pretty much what you’d expect [awards]

Mad Men

The Golden Globe nominations are out:

Best television series drama
In Treatment
Mad Men
True Blood

House, really? It seems so… out of place among the rest of the best drama nominees. Maybe the HFPA thought they needed to tap at least one drama on US network television. Meanwhile I love that True Blood scored a nomination – True Blood FTW! (I’d be rooting for Mad Men too, but it won this year.)

Best television musical or comedy
The Office
30 Rock

Out of all these comedies, I only watch 30 Rock regularly… so that’s what I’m backing. And I wish South Park had been included, because it’s been really awesome this last year. Also, I like Californication and all, but it does not belong in the “best comedy” category; it’s really about time that these awards committees added a “best dramedy” category for hybrids like this, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, etc.

Teen drama collects lots of worthless surfboard things [Gossip Girl]

Posted in awards, Gossip Girl, North Americana on August 4, 2008 by jetsamjr

Even though Gossip Girl isn’t all that popular with actual teens, it is popular with adults-posing-as-teens who vote in online polls: the tawdry teen drama won six useless, clunky surfboards at the Teen Choice Awards, which are ostensibly decided by teenagers. It’s a very reliable form of voting, because no one ever lied about their age on the internet.

Despite the victory, Josh Schwartz and the other brains behind GG shouldn’t put too much faith in their awards haul – one of them was given to Chace Crawford for his acting. Somewhere, Penn Badgley is having a major hissyfit

There’s this awards ceremony called the Emmys. You may have heard of it [awards]

Posted in awards, North Americana on July 18, 2008 by jetsamjr

So the 2008 Emmy nominations were announced this morning (by Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris… both of whom received nods. Coincidence? I think not!), and… they’re a little predictable. Nothing shocked me, except maybe for Two and a Half Men‘s inclusion in the best comedy field. Seriously: huh? Is Chuck Lorre blackmailing the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences or something?

That aside, the nominations are pretty good this year – most of my favourites got a look-in (notable snub: Battlestar Galactica. WTF, Emmy voters. I am crying real tears for Mary McDonnell right now) (not really). And thankfully Grey’s Anatomy was barred from the best drama category this year. Sucked in, Katherine Heigl… and the rest!

All the nominees I care about are after the jump. Continue reading

Battlestar Galactica thisclose to an actual Emmy nomination [awards]

Posted in awards, Battlestar Galactica, news, North Americana on July 3, 2008 by jetsamjr

Battlestar Galactica may actually do the unthinkable and score an Emmy nomination in a category the general public actually notices: Mary McDonnell is one of the 10 names on the “best actress in a drama” shortlist. I know kids – I’m scared too! While the award will probably end up in Patricia Arquette’s hands, again, the fact that Mary is even in consideration is pretty neat.

The LA Times‘ blog Gold Derby is doing a bang-up job of tracking the Emmy shortlists so head over there if you’re interested; the actual, sure-to-be-baffling-and-disappointing nominations are out later this month.

Teri Hatcher is gonna be so pissed… [awards]

Posted in awards, Desperate Housewives, news, North Americana on July 2, 2008 by jetsamjr

All the core Desperate Housewives made it onto the Emmys shortlist of best actress in a comedy… except Teri Hatcher. Snubbed! But… how did Eva Longoria make the cut and not Hatcher? It’s not like Teri deserves an Emmy, but is Gabby really a deeper, more thoughtfully drawn character than Susan?

Also unveiled: the shortlists for best supporting actor and best supporting actress in a drama. Rose Byrne for the win!

Grey’s Anatomy in danger of scoring yet another inexplicable Emmy nomination [award]

Posted in awards, comedy, drama, North Americana on June 27, 2008 by jetsamjr

Grey’s Anatomy has scored an Emmy nomination for best drama for the past two years… which, okay, fine. I’ve never really liked the show but other critics enjoyed the first couple of seasons, so maybe I just missed something.

But. Haven’t most critics totally bagged out the show’s most recent season? So how did Grey’s land a spot on this year’s list of contenders for the best drama Emmy – a list that includes genuinely acclaimed dramas like Dexter, Damages and The Wire? (Sadly, Battlestar Galactica has been barred by the Emmys. Again. Sheez.)

The full list of Emmy drama and comedy forerunners, after the jump. Continue reading
