Thank God You're Here

Thank God You’re Here will switch networks in 2009, moving to Seven from Ten. PWN3D!

“Having taken a year off it felt right to try some new things with the show – including a different home,” explained the show’s faux-judge Tom Gleisner, no doubt thrilled about getting the chance to obsequiously overuse the words “sensational” and “fantastic” on a whole new network.

Continued Tom: “Moving will give us the opportunity to expose Thank God You‘re Here to a whole new audience, while also allowing Shane [Bourne, the show’s host] to continue using his City Homicide parking space.” And give the show a chance to open its doors to a raft of Seven personalities!

America eyes Packed to the Rafters remake [news]

Packed to the Rafters

This is unexpected. Per Seven’s programming boss Tim Worner:

“[Packed to the Rafters] certainly already has some big name fans in Hollywood, including Damon Lindelhof [sic] and Carlton Cuse, the makers of Lost.”

Seems Cuse and “Lindelhof” (it’s called IMDb, Daily Telegraph. Please use it) are so keen on Packed to the Rafters that they might even remake it for US audiences. Because god forbid a foreign series actually air on US television. The horror!

Seven hates its fans [Packed to the Rafters]

Posted in Australiana, news, Packed to the Rafters, Seven, WTF? on December 1, 2008 by jetsamjr

Packed to the RaftersBecause Seven boneheadedly forgot to register, the domain name for the network’s hottest series of the year – an oversight I hope somebody was fired for, because seriously – an 18-year-old fanboy scooped it up for his own unofficial fansite. Perhaps consumed by hubris at their end-of-year ratings victory, Seven has now demanded he give the domain back.

Pfft. Seven should think about giving their top-rated series a decent official website before they go shutting down fansites run by kids who are intelligent enough to realise that people actually want to use the internet.

White wash [Home & Away]

Posted in Australiana, Home & Away, Neighbours, news, Seven, Ten on November 16, 2008 by jetsamjr

Home & AwayHome & Away and its even-more-tedious cousin Neighbours have come under fire because their casts include too many nillas and not enough of the other races. The White Australia policy is back in vogue!:

University of Queensland Aboriginal studies lecturer Sam Watson said the dramas were operating an “exclusive white family club” that didn’t reflect Australia’s true demographic.

“The producers and directors of these shows are very sadly harking back to the White Australia policy of the ’40s and ’50s,” he said. “Instead of embracing the rich diversities of our country, they are shunning it.”

To be fair to both soaps, if you venture into a typical Australian beachside town or banal middle-class suburb there are a lot of crackers about.

Seriously, though: why does anyone expect anything of Home & Away and Neighbours, two shows that have rarely included any non-white, non-hetero, non-Christian, non-able-bodied characters who aren’t sensationalised stereotypes? Even if racially diverse characters were written into the show, they’d only be forced into tedious storylines about teen pregnancies and relationship angst and pranks gone awry anyway.

Channel Seven dancing contest shockingly won by Channel Seven personality [Dancing with the Stars]

Dancing with the StarsHome & Away star Luke Jacobz has won the latest season of Dancing with the Stars, making him the seventh Channel Seven personality in eight seasons to walk away with the hideous sparkly mirror ball trophy. The only thing more scandalous is that the finale ran for a criminally bloated three hours.

Guess the gay [Packed to the Rafters]

Blind item madness! One of my secret sources (ie, some guy I know) tells me that one of the male castmembers in Packed to the Rafters is gay. Try to guess which one!

Clue: he’s pictured here:

[Insert “Rice” pun here] [Make Me a Supermodel]

Olympic gold medallist, underwear model and possible Michael Phelps-pasher Stephanie Rice has signed on to Make Me a Supermodel to “advise contestants on how to handle a sudden rise to fame and also how to appeal to the general public”.

I like Stephanie and all, but this is a pretty desperate play by the Seven Network.

Meanwhile, titled this report with an exceptionally boring “Stephanie Rice joins Make Me a Supermodel“. No “Models Love Rice”, etc etc?
