I’m not looking forward to the retro ’80s fashions this spin-off will inevitably reintroduce to society [Gossip Girl]

Gossip GirlI’ve never really been into the idea of a Gossip Girl spin-off. Now that said spin-off is more or less a certainty, I’m… not particularly enthused. Isn’t one ridiculous teen drama with lots of melodrama and sex enough?

But. If The CW is going to force Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage into doing a spin-off, and if the spin-off must be about Lily (yawn) and Rufus (yawner), then they could do a lot worse than the 1980s-flashback idea they’ve come up with:

the spinoff will center on young Lily Rhodes (her maiden name) who, after a falling out with her parents, is forced to move in with her sister, the black sheep of the Rhodes family. Overnight, Lily has to transition from a life of luxury and education at a wealthy Montecito boarding school to living deep in the San Fernando Valley she once made fun of and going to public school. Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the ’80s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own.

Eventually, she meets rocker Rufus Humphrey (played on “Gossip” by Matthew Settle) for a fling that will result in Lily’s secret pregnancy, but “that wouldn’t be for quite a while in the run of the show,” Schwartz said.

That actually sounds kind of interesting! Maybe Young Lily (or whatever its title turns out to be) will turn out to have the same nuance and attention to period details as Mad Men. (Ha ha ha!)

Ersatz Blake Lively [Gossip Girl]

Blake Lively is on the cover of Vogue… or rather, a young women who kinda looks like Blake Lively is on the cover of Vogue:

Gossip Girl

Seriously, who is this girl? Is it possible that Blake is really nothing without her great set of wild and luxurious blonde hair extensions?

Gossip Girl

I hope you weren’t enjoying watching Gossip Girl on Channel Nine or anything, because the network has gone and pulled the cult teen drama from their schedule, effective immediately.

To be fair, relatively few people were watching the series on free-to-air TV… which may have something to do with the fact that it aired at 10.30pm. And that all the episodes were more than a year old. Well played, Nine.

Spin-off updates [Gossip Girl]

So it appears that the Gossip Girl spin-off won’t be about Young Rufus and Lily after all. Phew. And the proposed spin-off might not even happen: apparently Josh Schwartz wants to concentrate on maintaining the quality of the flagship show. Yes! Do that.

Speaking of spin-offs: the Full House reboot (remember that?) is dead. Strangely, I am disappointed about this, only because the show itself would have been so entrancingly terrible.

TV’s least glamorous spin-off [Gossip Girl]

Remember how before the Gossip Girl mobisodes were about Dorota, they were about Young Rufus and Lily in Love? And remember how I was chuffed that YR&LiL had seemingly been rejected, because why do any sort of series about a boring couple no one cares about?

Well now it turns out that the real reason that idea wasn’t used for the mobisodes is because it will likely be used for the forthcoming Gossip Girl spin-off. To put that another way, the spin-off will be about Rufus and Lily’s rockin’, ill-fated ’90s romance. (Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle would not play the roles, der.)

Snooze. I hate this.

The bitch is back? Per E!, Michelle Trachtenberg’s evil bitch Georgina Sparks will return to the Upper East Side, probably at the end of Gossip Girl‘s current season. Fun!

Gossip Girl

Earlier in the year The CW said they were spinning off Gossip Girl. Then they said they weren’t. Now network president Dawn Ostroff says they’re thinking about diluting their strongest brand again:

“Nothing really tangible yet, but we’re talking about it… If it’s the right idea, we’d all embrace it and be enthusiastic. But nobody more than Josh [Schwartz] and Stephanie [Savage] want to make sure there’s the right idea that they can wrap their arms around and really be excited about.”

Meh. Isn’t it enough that The CW already has Gossip Girl and 90210 and Privileged? Do we really need Gossip Girl II: The Gossip Girlening, too?

Meanwhile, the super-lucky kids at New York mag got to meet with Josh and Stephanie, who revealed a few tidbits about future plots. (Georgina might be back!) Lucky!

Also, I spent a good chunk of last week creating this gallery of the fashion of Gossip Girl. I went to university to learn how to do that!
