This show sucks [drama]

Vampire cat

I hated Twilight (the book) but kinda dug Twilight (the movie), so I’m not sure how I feel about The CW’s latest pilot, Vampire Diaries:

Originally published in 1993 – which, as the CW took pains to note, was years before Stephenie Meyer launched her Twilight book franchise – Vampire Diaries revolves around a young woman who’s torn between two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – who are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.

On the one hand, it’s being produced by the same company who does Gossip Girl and showrun by Dawson’s Creek‘s Kevin Williamson. Both potentially awesome. On the other hand, vampires are sooooo 2008.

“I’m so bored I could die” [Sex and the City]

When I first read that Kristen Johnston might play Patsy in the long-rumoured US remake of Ab Fab, I wasn’t sure if she was up to playing a washed-up booze bag. Then I remembered this scene from Sex and the City, and decided she’s juuuuust right for the role:

Gratuitous nudity alert! [Underbelly]

Regular transmission of this blog resumes now that I have my Macbook back from the repairnerds after it broke again.

Speaking of things that are criminal, I previewed the first four episodes of Underbelly on Wednesday, and it’s good. My official review is here, but if you can’t be bothered clicking your mouse (which, let’s face it, is a lot of work) lemme just say that it’s entertaining, compelling, and features lots and lots and lots of boobs and bums.

… one of which belongs to Matthew Newton. It’s onscreen for one continuous shot that lasts at least 10 awkward seconds. You have been warned.

I’m not looking forward to the retro ’80s fashions this spin-off will inevitably reintroduce to society [Gossip Girl]

Gossip GirlI’ve never really been into the idea of a Gossip Girl spin-off. Now that said spin-off is more or less a certainty, I’m… not particularly enthused. Isn’t one ridiculous teen drama with lots of melodrama and sex enough?

But. If The CW is going to force Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage into doing a spin-off, and if the spin-off must be about Lily (yawn) and Rufus (yawner), then they could do a lot worse than the 1980s-flashback idea they’ve come up with:

the spinoff will center on young Lily Rhodes (her maiden name) who, after a falling out with her parents, is forced to move in with her sister, the black sheep of the Rhodes family. Overnight, Lily has to transition from a life of luxury and education at a wealthy Montecito boarding school to living deep in the San Fernando Valley she once made fun of and going to public school. Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the ’80s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own.

Eventually, she meets rocker Rufus Humphrey (played on “Gossip” by Matthew Settle) for a fling that will result in Lily’s secret pregnancy, but “that wouldn’t be for quite a while in the run of the show,” Schwartz said.

That actually sounds kind of interesting! Maybe Young Lily (or whatever its title turns out to be) will turn out to have the same nuance and attention to period details as Mad Men. (Ha ha ha!)

Ersatz Blake Lively [Gossip Girl]

Blake Lively is on the cover of Vogue… or rather, a young women who kinda looks like Blake Lively is on the cover of Vogue:

Gossip Girl

Seriously, who is this girl? Is it possible that Blake is really nothing without her great set of wild and luxurious blonde hair extensions?

Golden Globes ’09 actually not that frustrating [awards]

True Blood

The Golden Globes were more than 48 hours ago, which in internet time is approximately 57 years, but if you’re desperado to know what I made of the winners you can check out my verdict here. (Spoiler: overall I was pretty chuffed – yay Anna Paquin!)
