Golden Globe nominations pretty much what you’d expect [awards]

Mad Men

The Golden Globe nominations are out:

Best television series drama
Dexter
House
In Treatment
Mad Men
True Blood

House, really? It seems so… out of place among the rest of the best drama nominees. Maybe the HFPA thought they needed to tap at least one drama on US network television. Meanwhile I love that True Blood scored a nomination – True Blood FTW! (I’d be rooting for Mad Men too, but it won this year.)

Best television musical or comedy
Californication
Entourage
The Office
30 Rock
Weed

Out of all these comedies, I only watch 30 Rock regularly… so that’s what I’m backing. And I wish South Park had been included, because it’s been really awesome this last year. Also, I like Californication and all, but it does not belong in the “best comedy” category; it’s really about time that these awards committees added a “best dramedy” category for hybrids like this, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, etc.

More after the jump. Continue reading

Spin-office [The Office]

Posted in comedy, news, North Americana, The Office on April 3, 2008 by jetsamjr

The Office spin-offI’m a little bit concerned about the newly announced plans for a spin-off of The Office.

Mostly because Kristin from E! did a bit of digging and revealed that “the powers that be at NBC have been trying to come up with a premise [for the spin-off] for the past year, and they have: nothing”. Which kind of suggests to me that the network is just making a spin-off for the sake of it, and not because they have any interesting stories to tell about these people that can’t be revealed in the mother Office.

Case in point: the spin-off is rumoured to revolve around Dwight, which is the easiest, laziest, least creative path it could possibly take. Like, as soon as the spin-off was greenlit, didn’t you totally go, “Hey, I wonder if it’ll be about Dwight?” It’s just so… obvious, not to mention the fact that if it’s confirmed there’ll be all sorts of awful “Dwight’s promotion to full series”-type headlines.

(Also, NBC boss Ben Silverman was all “We promise not to do an Office spin-off unless it’s up to the quality of the rest of our programming”. This coming from the man who greenlit a Knight Rider update.)

But hey, maybe the spin-off could be good after all. The US version of The Office itself started as sucky, derivative dreck, before realising that it sat more comfortably as a bizarrely mundane sitcom than a straight-up mockumentary. Perhaps the spin-off can find a nice groove for itself too.

I think we should all be very wary of spin-offs, though – let’s not forget that for every Frasier, there are 10 Joeys. Now let us never speak of that show again.
