Seinfeld, Gates team up for weird commercial [WTF?]

I’m not sure what to make of the Microsoft commercial starring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates:

On the one hand, it’s light and kind of amusing. (“Platinum” is my favourite line.) On the other hand, I have no idea what to make of it.

  1. My understanding is that it’s setting the scene for future commercials, in which Gates and Seinfeld engage in lighthearted and improbable banter. But more importantly, it’s supposed to give a human face to Gates/Microsoft, a company not known for giving a rat’s about customers or, y’know, good products. Previously they never needed it, I guess, but Apple and Google — currently Microsoft’s biggest threats — both have a lot of goodwill from users and are considered both cooler and actually on the side of consumers.

All that said, I don’t think the ad achieves any of this very well, but yeah, that’s my understanding of what they’re trying to do. No ad can make Vista suck any less though. Maybe they should sink the money into that instead.
