Admit it: Big Bird is awesome [kids’ shows]

When I was a kid I think Oscar the Grouch was my favourite Sesame Street character – partly because he had an elephant living in his trashcan, but mostly because he was, well, a grouch. (I also loved the Twiddlebugs. Awesome.)

But Big Bird was definitely one of my favourites (along with Cookie Monster. And the Count. And those aliens that went “yiiiiip yip yip yip yip!”. And all the other characters too, really) – amazingly, he’s still played by 74-year-old Caroll Spinney, who’s been wearing the eight-foot, yellow-feathered costume since the show started almost four decades ago. To quote Hurley: dude.

Spinney’s workday transformation begins with a pair of orange furry jeans encircled in hot pink ridges.

Next, he slides on manhole-size pink webbed feet made of foam which are built around a pair of Hush Puppies loafers.

The crew then straps a television monitor to his chest. Wearing drugstore reading glasses, Spinney will watch the monitor while inside the top half of the costume to see how Big Bird appears on camera. Otherwise, he can’t see what’s going on around him while inside the bird.

Spinney tops off his ensemble with the familiar 25-pound top half of Big Bird, a combination of costume and puppet. He works Big Bird’s mouth with his hand and the eyes with a coat hanger attached to his pinky finger.

How cool is that?

Love all the Sesame Street people to death 🙂

I’m pretty sad about it… I’ve got this wall hanger filled with characters you could buy for $2 from Coles. My faves are Oscar (of course), Cookie, Big Bird and Snuffleupagus and Baby Natasha.

  2. […] Head over to to TV Junior now to remind yourself why Big Bird rocks. […]

  3. my favorite character was big bird but i love them all and all the other characters come in a close 2nd place
